CENTERVILLE — Fenwick High School's baseball team jumped out to a 9-0 lead, but had to come from behind in the seventh inning to win the Division III sectional championship Saturday, May 17, at Centerville High School's Booster Field.

The Falcons (14-10), who found themselves down by two runs heading into their last at-bat in the top of the seventh, scored three times to retake the lead and then held on to beat Carlisle 12-11 to advance to next Saturday's district final at noon against Versailles at Centerville.

Craig Goubeaux had a one-out double and scored on a single by Derek Graham for the first run of the seventh. Joey Trimbach, pinch running for Graham, scored all the way from first on a double by Jeff Benhase to tie the game, and then Benhase, who went to third on the throw home, scored the go-ahead run on a deep fly ball by Addison Wellens.

Tyler Zaidel, who got the final out of the sixth inning, came back to face four Carlisle batters to seal the victory.

"It's a great feeling," Zaidel said of the win. "I knew if I could get two quick outs, I wouldn't have to face the middle of their lineup. They can hit the ball, and they did today."

With two outs in the seventh, Carlisle's Ben Dellaposta reached first on an error, but Zaidel got Joe Profitt to fly out to left field to preserve the win.

"At first, I was just raring back and trying to throw strikes, but Greg (Johnson) came over and told me I was better than that, and that the defense would back me up. I settled down then and concentrated more," Zaidel said.

Fenwick scored three times in the second inning on four hits. Benhase tacked on another run in the third with a leadoff solo home run, his sixth of the season, and the Falcons exploded for five runs in the fourth to open a 9-0 lead.

The Indians (22-6) were just about to get started, though.

Carlisle manufactured one run in the fourth and scored four times in the fifth, including three on a triple by Kyle England.

England added a two-run home run in the sixth as part of Carlisle's six-run burst that put them ahead for the first time in the game, 11-9.

"That says a lot about our kids," Carlisle coach Brad Sizemore said. "We could have cashed it in and quit, but that's the reason we had 22 wins and were our league champions. We knew we were going to hit, and we gave ourselves a chance to win, but give them credit. They are a good team."

England led the Indians, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, a home run and five RBIs. Profitt, Dylan Brandenburg and Jake Gibson had two hits apiece.

Benhase led the Falcons, going 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and two RBIs, and Goubeaux was 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored.

"I'm really happy to get out of here with a win," first-year Fenwick coach Sam McConnell said. "We had our backs to the wall, but played hard and fought back. My hat's off to Carlisle, but I'm ecstatic (for our kids)." They played their hearts out."
