Unseeded Urbana duo qualifies for district

TROY — The 10th match point was the charm for the unseeded Urbana doubles team of Ben Alderfer and Perry Thompson.
They qualified for their first district tournament on the first day of the Division II boys tennis sectional tournament at Troy High School and Troy Community Park on Thursday, May 15.
Alderfer and Thompson took the first set from No. 3 seed Tyler Collins and Brad Officer of Northridge 6-3 and took a 5-3 lead in the second set. Alderfer and Thompson lost five match points and fell in the second set 5-7.
Collins and Officer took a 2-0 lead in the third set and fought off four match points before Alderfer and Thompson won 6-4 to advance to Saturday's 9 a.m. semifinals.
The top-seeded Yellow Springs doubles team of Oliva Chen and Alex Turner defeated Kenton Ridge's Cody Hidy and Kyle Price 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the districts. They will meet Alderfer and Thompson in the semifinals.
Second-seeded Adam Bennett and Ross Smith of Kenton Ridge also advanced to districts by defeating Cedarville's Benjamin Pingel and Brandon Corry 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Bennett and Smith will meet fourth-seeded Andrew McDonagh and Aaron Stevenson of Lehman Catholic in the semifinals.
Greenon's Quinn Charney and Northeastern's Sage Boggs both came up one win short of qualifying for districts.
The No. 4 seed Charney fell to unseeded Josh Smedley of Tippecanoe 6-0, 6-2. Second-seeded Rob Ball of Bellefontaine defeated Boggs 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals.
