Slagle held the same position at South High School for the past two seasons, with a record of 22-22. He was an assistant coach for 15 years, all at South, prior to that.
South and North high schools will merge to form Springfield, which opens in September. Springfield's fall coaches are under contract, and most of the winter head coaches were hired Thursday.
Slagle will teach social studies at the high school. His one-year supplemental contract pays $5,405 in addition to his teaching salary.
"I've had a great response from the teachers from both schools," Slagle said. "They know me and they know what I stand for. The expectations will continue."
One program still without a head coach is girls basketball. The position has been re-posted.
A district hiring committee interviewed North head girls coach Tim Elliott and South head girls coach Mike Gaines, Springfield athletic director Mark Stoll said.
"The committee felt they needed to get more candidates, and they wanted to do more interviews," Stoll said.
Also hired Thursday were boys swimming coach Dave Johnson, girls swimming coach Allyson Teusink, wrestling coach Virgil Goodwine, and cheerleading coach Crystal Carter-Rhodes.
Johnson coached swimming at North for several years before stepping down in 2006.
Teusink coached the North swim team for the three previous seasons.
Goodwine was South's wrestling coach for one season.
