MORE: Slagle recommended for Springfield's basketball position
Wednesday, April 09, 2008
SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield City Schools' board of education will vote on the recommendation to hire Bill Slagle as Springfield High School's head boys basketball coach on Thursday, April 10.
Slagle, 43, was offered the position on Friday. Slagle was the head coach at South for two seasons, with a record of 22-22. He was an assistant coach at South for 15 years prior to that.
Extras
North and South high schools will merge to form Springfield High in September. Here are some of Slagle's thoughts on his future position.
Q: What's your first move as Springfield's head boys basketball coach?
A: "I'm going to sit down with the people I trust and the people that can help me. ... We have a wealth of resources here in Springfield when it comes to basketball that we have to use. The worst mistake I could make is to think I know everything and think everything has to be one way."
Q: What needs the most improvement in the program?
A: "We have to get physically stronger. The way the game is played now, strength often beats talent. ... It's going to be a much more physical game."
Q: What doesn't need improvement in the program?
A: "People are really excited, and I really think the community is going to rally behind the Wildcats. I think we're going to put people on the floor and in the classroom that will make them proud."
Q: What is the most difficult aspect of the merger?
A: "Staying focused on the task at hand. Expectations of the future are so great, people are losing sight of what's going on right now. Our motto is going to be 'Stay in the moment.' Let's work on today instead of dreaming about the next day, or next year."
Q: The basketball program will double in size in 2008-09. How will you handle more athletes and interest in the program?
A: "We have to make sure our coaches are student-centered. It doesn't matter how many students you have if you have the right coaches who are looking out for them. I want to hire the right people with the right attitudes."
