Coffey's hot start leads him to top honor
Culbertson is coach of the year

SPRINGFIELD — In Catholic Central's first boys basketball game of the season, Kyle Coffey scored 21 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.
"That showed me what I could do. I just had to keep working at it," Coffey said.
Extras
The 6-foot-3 senior didn't let up all season. The 2008 Springfield News-Sun Clark County Boys Basketball Player of the Year averaged 19.2 points, 11.4 rebounds and 3.7 steals per game.
Playing the versatile wing position posed a problem for opponents who tried to defend him.
"I'd rather get the ball on the wing and beat my man to get to the hoop," Coffey said. "But if there was a smaller man on me, I could post up. Against a bigger man, I could stay outside and shoot."
Coffey was the only player in Clark County to average a double-double, and he led the county in rebounding.
He was second in the county in scoring to Josh McKee of Tecumseh.
Catholic Central head coach Dan Shay said Coffey's experience as the soccer team's goalie helped his agility under the basket.
"When he shot the ball, he could stop on a dime and get his own rebound," Shay said. "He was very quick at getting off the floor."
Catholic Central finished the season 12-9 and had its most wins since 2003 (12-9).
Tecumseh head coach Roger Culbertson, the 2008 Springfield News-Sun Clark County Boys Basketball Coach of the Year, guided his team to the Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail Division championship, its first league title since 1999.
The Arrows' 18-3 record was the team's best mark since finishing the season 19-3 in 1964.
Culbertson said his team was goal-oriented and driven by the seniors.
"It was a real good season," Culbertson said. "We had a great group of kids and every day was fun going to the gym for practice."
