26 vying for head coach position
Recommendation for boys basketball coach is expected to be made by April 7.

SPRINGFIELD — South head boys basketball coach Bill Slagle is among 26 applicants for the same position at Springfield High School.
The district was scheduled to begin reviewing applications on Monday, March 10. Applications will still be accepted throughout the hiring process.

Slagle, a social studies teacher at South, was the Wildcats' head coach for two seasons and an assistant coach for 15 seasons prior to that. North head coach Eddie Ford retired from coaching after the 2008 season and did not apply.
"I'm very happy with the applicants," Springfield Athletic Director Mark Stoll said. "We've got a variety of applicants from all over the state, and local. Some of them have a lot of experience."
Candidates will interview with a six-person panel of district administrators and community members. The district will "probably not" interview all applicants, Stoll said.
The district's goal is to make recommendations for all winter head coaching positions (boys basketball, girls basketball, swimming, wrestling, bowling and cheerleading) to the superintendent by April 7.
