It was easy to spot Josh McKee and Brian Wagner
on the football field this season. Find the ball, and those two were sure to be near.
McKee, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound Tecumseh High School senior, caught 33 passes for 786 yards, rushed for 461 yards and scored a total of 18 touchdowns. The 2007 News-Sun Clark County Offensive Player of the Year lined up as a quarterback, running back and receiver on offense this season.
McKee also had three interceptions as a defensive back, returned punts and kicks and was the Arrows' punter.
"He's not a great player by accident," Tecumseh head coach Kent Massie said. "He's a great player because he worked extremely hard to get that way."
Wagner, a 6-2, 220-pound Catholic Central senior, led the Fighting Irish with 115 tackles, 13 sacks and 23 tackles for a loss during the regular season. The 2007 News-Sun Clark County Defensive Player of the Year was the man in the middle of a team that allowed 50 points during the regular season.
He also rushed for 1,787 yards and scored 26 touchdowns, leading the Irish to the Division VI, Region 24 playoffs for the fifth time in as many seasons.
"He's done everything he could to create the physical prowess that was going to enable him to play football, and play it the way it was demanded around here," Catholic Central head coach Steve DeWitt said.
DeWitt, the 2007 News-Sun Clark County Football Coach of the Year, led the Fighting Irish to their first undefeated season since 1963.
The success continues: Catholic Central will play Newark Catholic at Upper Arlington at 7 p.m. Saturday for a berth in the Division VI state title game. Selections are based on regular-season performance only.
