Raiders land big guard from Indiana
Six-foot-5 Tyler Koch set the state finals scoring record this year with 37 points; junior averaged 22.5 points, 6 rebounds.

FAIRBORN — Last week, Michigan's John Beilein visited Winchester (Ind.) High School to see if he could recruit 6-foot-5 guard Tyler Koch, who is finishing his junior year.
Beilein was too late.
Extras
"I asked Tyler what would happen if the really big schools came after him," Winchester coach Chip Mehaffey said. "He told me it wouldn't make a difference."
Ultimately, it didn't make a difference if Michigan wanted or didn't want Koch because Tuesday, April 29, he committed to Wright State, the first undergrad to commit to the Raiders for 2009-10.
So, who is Tyler Koch — other than no relation to Alex Koch, who played with the Raiders five years ago and also is from Indiana?
"He plays his best in big games," Mehaffey said. "He's a tremendous athlete. We've been in the state 2-A finals three of the past eight years and Tyler's been involved in two of those. This year, we lost 69-67 in the finals to Fort Wayne Luers, who have Deshaun Thomas, who has committed to Ohio State (as a sophomore). Thomas scored 18 in our game and Tyler scored 37, a state finals scoring record."
Koch averaged 22.5 points and six rebounds as a junior.
Mehaffey said Ball State wanted Koch, but that's only 20 minutes from home. Wright State is close, but also away from home.
"We had this game we'd play," Mehaffey said. "I'd ask Tyler what he thought on a 1-10 scale of the schools he visited. He told me in the fall, Wright State was a 7. We went to a game during the season, and he said it was a 9. Monday, he said it was a 10.
"Anybody with a brain could see what's going on with coach Brad Brownell and how other schools might want him, but Tyler was comfortable with the whole coaching staff, the kids, the facilities. He wants to have an impact at an early age, and he believes the team could make a run in the NCAA tournament."
At the least, WSU should have two scholarships available for 2009-10. Next season's team has two seniors, Will Graham and Gavin Horne, a guard and an inside man.
The Raiders are coming off consecutive 20-plus-win seasons, the first time they've accomplished that in their Division I history.

Tyler Koch was a good get for WSU. He was given offers by WSU, Evansville, and Ball State. Big East and Big 10 schools were very interested.
Here is a link to WSU bball discussions about Koch that started in March.

Probably most Raider fans ignore the DDN site because the DDN tries to throw in their negative spin.
The most ridulous article I ever read in the DDN was the one about the “DDN not playing favorites when it comes to basketball”. The folks at the DDN really should have a reality check. Do they really expect the Miami Valley to take them seriously?

Wright State is growing and the fans will be back in in big numbers next year. The Raiders are poised to have their best years in their D I history. Don’t be negative. The young men who are commiting to WSU know this!! People do care and you know IT, you just don’t want WSU to do well!

Wright State finishes every year in the top third of NCAA Div 1 attendance. Last year they were around 90th which places them in the same attendance ranking as Charlotte, UMass, Southern Cal, and Butler. Wright States attendance is better than two-thirds of the teams in the A-10 and every team in the MAC. So, I think a lot of people care. Now that they have a quality coach, high school players are starting to care. Signings like this will only increase the attendance at WSU.

6’5” is as big as it gets for a college guard

Why would anyone comment here? Wright State fans knew about Tyler’s commitment and discussed on their board extensively for several days now. Tyler is not a DaShaun Wood kind of a player; he is a taller version of Vaughn Duggins.

The article hasn’t been up that long. Do you expect for everyone to be checking in on the website constantly to read these articles and comment?
Anyway, this is a great pick up for the Raiders. He has the size and the ability to score from the point guard position, a big game player, kind of like DaShaun Wood. Not that he is there yet, but maybe in a few years he can be the go to guy for WSU
