SPRINGFIELD — Wittenberg University remembered one of its greatest leaders inside the HPER Center on Saturday.

A ceremony was held to officially dedicate the gymnasium in honor of former women's basketball player and coach Pam Evans Smith on Saturday before the women's basketball game against Wooster.

"It's one of the most prestigious honors a university can bestow on an alum and a staff member," said Roger Smith, Pam's husband. "It's a great day. What a tribute to Pam to see so many people present today."

The gymnasium is now officially named Pam Evans Smith Arena. A wall honoring Smith's legacy at Wittenberg was also unveiled outside the entrance to the arena inside the Legends Lobby.

Evans Smith passed away last June after a lengthy battle with cancer. She played four seasons at Wittenberg before coaching the Tigers for 21 seasons, where she guided them to a record of 401-170.

Several former players and assistant coaches came to the event. Roger Smith thanked all of them for "everything they've done" for his wife.

"Pam would've said they're the biggest reason for her success, and why we're here," Smith said.
