About Duquesne
Third-year coach Ron Everhart has worked wonders. The Dukes posted their first winning record in 14 years by going 17-13 last season. They've won seven straight games, and their 12-4 start is the program's best since 1979-80. A charter member of the 33-year-old Atlantic 10, they posted their first 3-0 league start by rallying from an 11-point second-half deficit to beat George Washington 88-83 on Wednesday.
About Dayton
Despite a sparkling record, the Flyers are in a funk after losing their A-10 opener at UMass by 13 and barely squeaking by lowly Fordham at home. Outside shooting has been their downfall. They're hitting just 41.1 percent from the field, including 30.1 on 3-pointers.
And their defense has sagged. After allowing only one of their first 12 foes to shoot 40 percent or better (Creighton), four of their last five opponents have reached that mark.
Outlook
The Dukes have been averaging nearly 80 points per game, but they're not one of the A-10's better defensive teams. The Flyers need to get their transition game going. If not, they probably won't be able to keep pace offensively.
Quote
"They may be a surprise to some, but not to the coaches in this league or the players in this league," UD coach Brian Gregory said of the Dukes. "They always play with great toughness and intensity, and they have very talented players."
