RedHawks' Gaines hopes to get drafted
Sunday, April 06, 2008
OXFORD — The waiting game has begun for Miami University football player Jerrid Gaines.
Gaines, a South High School grad, worked out for several National Football League teams at Miami's NFL pro day on March 13, including the Cincinnati Bengals, Jacksonville Jaguars and San Francisco 49ers.
He'll work out for the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday, April 10. The NFL draft will take place April 26-27.
At this point, he doesn't know what to expect. He's been projected everywhere from the fourth round to seventh round, and could also be picked up as an undrafted free agent.
"I'm getting excited," Gaines said. "You keep hearing things, but you can't listen to everything."
All he can do now is work hard and, hopefully, impress the scouts.
"I hope a team will fall in love with me," Gaines said. "I'm just hoping a team will pick me up if I don't (get drafted)."
The NFL pedigree runs in the family. Gaines father, Wentford, played three seasons in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears.
After this season, Jerrid played for legendary Alabama coach Gene Stallings in the second annual Texas vs. The Nation All-Star game in El Paso, Texas, on Feb. 2. He started at cornerback on the Texas team and finished with three solo tackles in a 41-14 Texas victory.
Now that his college days are coming to a close, Gaines is pleased with his career — but he's not ready to quit playing just yet.
"I had a solid career," Gaines said. "I played pretty well for four years. It was a great experience to get to play with some great (NFL) players like Ben Roethlisberger and Jacob Bell (St. Louis Rams offensive guard).
"I just hope I can join them," Gaines said. "It would be a great feeling."
Short Takes
Track and field: Urbana grad Jasmine Pickett, a freshman at Cal-Poly, finished first in the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.47 seconds at the UCLA Invitational in Los Angeles on
March 8. She was also third in the long jump with a leap of
18 feet, seven inches.
Baseball: Kenton Ridge grad Loren Fleischman, a sophomore at Ohio Northern, is batting .259 with 10 RBIs, three doubles and two triples in 81 at-bats. He's started all 22 games for the Polar Bears (8-14) this season.
