South grad's interception preserves Miami's victory
Sunday, November 18, 2007
South grad Jerrid Gaines couldn't have asked for a better way to end his career at Miami University's Yager Stadium.
On the final play of their game against the University of Akron on Wednesday, the Redhawks' senior cornerback intercepted his first pass of the season from Zips quarterback Chris Jacquemain in the end zone to seal the 7-0 victory.
"I had to go get it," Gaines said. "You never know with jump balls, anyone can get it. It's real good to end my career here like that."
The RedHawks earned their first shutout since 2004 on Wednesday, and won the game on a defensive touchdown.
"It was a fun game," Gaines said. "For the defense to score and win the game was pretty big for us."
It also means the RedHawks (6-5, 5-1 Mid-American Conference) clinched a berth in the MAC Championship game against Central Michigan on Dec. 1 at Ford Field in Detroit, thanks to Bowling Green's victory over Buffalo on Saturday. A win in Detroit translates into a bowl game for the RedHawks.
The teams who compete in the MAC Championship typically go to the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala., or the Motor City Bowl in Detroit. In 2003, Gaines played in the GMAC Bowl, and in 2004, he played in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. He doesn't care where the RedHawks land this year.
"A bowl game is a bowl game," Gaines said. "It's nice to even be talking about still playing."
Gaines, who plays the boundary cornerback, has 34 total tackles this year. After the season ends, he will begin thinking about workouts for a possible NFL career.
Until then, Gaines' only worry is winning football games. The RedHawks began the year 1-3, but have won five of their last seven games.
"We started off slow, but we've picked it up," Gaines said. "We're on a roll right now."
Women's soccer
North grad Shauna Stapleton, a senior at Purdue University, was named the Big Ten Tournament offensive MVP after her two assists led the Boilermakers to a 3-1 victory over Ohio State and their first Big Ten Title in the program's 10-year history. Stapleton scored 10 goals and 11 assists, becoming the first player in school history to post double-digit numbers in both categories.
The Boilermakers (19-2-2) received a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Women's Soccer National Tournament, playing host to first- and second-round matches. They beat Oakland 4-0 on Friday, and will meet Indiana today at 1 p.m. for the right to advance to the round of 16.
