Slagle recommended for Springfield's basketball position

COMMENT: Is Slagle the right choice for the team?

SPRINGFIELD — The conversation was short, but Bill Slagle called it "the best phone call I ever got."

On Friday, April 4, Springfield High School athletic director Mark Stoll phoned Slagle to offer him the position of the school's head boys basketball coach. Slagle accepted immediately.

"This is where I want to be; there's no place else I'd rather be," Slagle said.

Slagle was one of five candidates interviewed for the position. A five-person committee was part of the recommendation process.

The Springfield City Schools' board of education will vote on the recommendation on Thursday, April 10.

Slagle, a teacher and coach in the district for 17 years, will be in charge of building the boys basketball programs from North and South high schools after they merge in September. South's record was 10-11 in 2007-08. North's record was 1-20.

"It's an honor and a privilege and I understand what a huge responsibility this is," Slagle said. "By the same token, if you're a competitor, this is the type of challenge you love."

In two years as South's head coach, Slagle's record was 22-22. He was the top assistant to Larry Ham when South advanced to the Division I regional tournament five times between 1996 and 2004.

Greg Newland, Springfield's associate athletic director, hired Slagle as South's head coach in 2006.

"(Slagle's) organized and he's a disciplinarian," Newland said. "That's exactly what the new high school needs — someone organized to handle the logistics; somebody in charge. When he speaks, everybody listens."

Slagle, 43, will teach social studies at Springfield.
