How we chose the athletes
To select the top athletes, the Springfield News-Sun used the following criteria:
- Excelled in several sports, or was dominant in one sport in high school.
- Received recognition from the school, league or state levels.
- Played at the college level.
- Played four years at the college level.
- Played at the professional level.
- Athletes were selected by a panel of former coaches from the school and representatives of the Springfield News-Sun.
