Voice your opposition to proposed cuts

Gov. Ted Strickland has proposed a 50 percent cut to library funding, effective July 1. This proposal will cut the Clark County Public Library by $2.5 million per year. This could well mean a further reduction in hours, services and staff, or even the possibility of locations being closed.

According to the Ohio Library Council, more than 70 percent of Ohio’s 251 public libraries receive their operating funds solely from the state. Clark County Public Library falls into this category. Ohio’s public libraries offer critical services to those looking for jobs and operating small businesses. Public libraries are also an integral part of education, which Gov. Strickland says is critical to the state’s economic recovery. This cut comes at a time when the library is experiencing unprecedented increases in usage by job seekers, children and teens, and all seeking information and entertainment.

We urge citizens to contact Strickland, State Rep. Ross McGregor, State Rep. Robert Hackett and State Sen. Chris Widener, Rep. Vernon Sykes (Chairman of the House Finance Committee), and Rep. Armond Budish (Speaker of the House) to voice their opposition to this proposal.
