We have DUI arrests, wrecks, fatalities and checkpoints. We have spousal and child abuse, fights, robberies and killings. We have AA, Al-Anon, Al-A-Teen, Rehab, SADD, MADD and statistics galore. All due to alcohol. Then our city sees fit to have these beverages at city-sanctioned family functions. I just don’t understand.

Stalk and murder two young women and don’t get the death penalty. Beat a shop owner to death in the course of a robbery and get 15 years. Sell heroin and cocaine and get probation. Yes, Toto, we’re still in Springfield.

We were going to attend several performances at the Arts Festival until we heard about the tires being slashed, cars and motorcycles being keyed and items being stolen from cars. We work hard to have what we have and try to stay away where “trouble” lurks. It’s a great asset for Springfield, but I’ll put my time and energy when and where it’s more secure.

Veteran’s, Veterans or Veterans’ Park — it doesn’t matter how it’s spelled. It’s about who it honors. Andy McGinn is starting to sound like a commie, showing no respect.

My opinion on the spelling dilemma regarding Veteran’s Park/Veterans Park is to use the grammatically correct spelling. Mistakes should not be perpetuated just because they are old ones. Better yet, call it “Cliff Park,” as I have since I was a child.

Could we dedicate the whole Speak Up section for President Bush’s accomplishments? You might have to fill part of it up with ads.

Google Adolf Hitler. He gained support convincing Germans he was their saviour from economic depression. Glen Beck, Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann and the Tea Party are dividing the country and gaining extreme followers who think they need to carry guns to church.

The Republicans have shown their true colors. Don’t be fooled. Remember the sad consequences of tax cuts for the rich that got us where we are today.

The Tea Party is saturated with “god fearing” people, just like the KKK.
