Don’t rush Sotomayor confirmation process

I don’t know if Judge Sonia Sotomayor is a racist, but from some of her own words and some of her rulings, the possibility does exist. There should be no rush to confirm her appointment.

She needs to be thoroughly questioned and her background completely checked out, not only for her racial views, but also her competence. Her rulings have been overturned two-thirds of the time and maybe more, depending on the results of the firefighter case which is to be taken up by the court.

Since this is a lifetime appointment, which cannot be revoked if a mistake is made, Republicans need to stand firm and ask the tough questions. Democrats were in no hurry to confirm Bush’s nominees, and that is OK.

No one should be hurried through.

I do not advocate the personal and vicious attacks of the Democrats, but thorough, responsible questions need to be asked.

Cook’s commentary on global warming was right

Dr. Martin Cook hit all nails on the head when it comes to global warming. It was refreshing to see truth in print, instead of the almost daily dearth of lies and misinformation about global warming. Too bad the article was located on the opinion page; it should have been on the front page as hard news.

Relating more “inconvenient” truth, despite articles to the contrary, Greenland’s main ice sheet is growing in thickness at a steady two inch rate per year. In the 1980s, a World War II plane was found buried under 260 feet of ice. The plane had emergency landed there during a flight in 1943. Like clockwork every year, someone reports the Arctic ice has practically disappeared. And every year, like clockwork, it mysteriously reappears. This occurs in winter. Imagine that.

More than 31,000 scientists across the U.S. all agree, “There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the atmosphere.” In science, there is no such thing as consensus. The most damaging part of this myth is politicians are preparing to craft policy that will affect our economy and way of life using the global warming lie. Everyone agrees that a cleaner planet and conservation is better. Let’s go about this smartly.
