Sex offenders live near schools

Federal Judge James S. Gwin ruled on Sept. 4, 2007, that an Ohio law prohibiting sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of a school is unconstitutional with respect to those who committed their crimes before the law took effect on July 31, 2003.

The decision invalidated part of Ohio’s Sex Offender Registration and Notification (SORN) statute, Ohio Revised Code 2950.034. I have been researching on www.clarkcountysheriff.com and have found that out of 27 schools, there are 20 schools that are in danger.

These predators are violating state laws. I have been in contact with Sheriff Gene Kelly’s office via e-mail. They have not responded.

Here is the information I have found. Sexual offenders living within a .25-mile radius of our schools: Catholic Central, 1200 E. High St. (6), Nightingale Montessori (5), Snow Hill (1), Fulton (7), Simon Kenton (0), Kenwood (1), Lagonda (1), Lincoln (2), Horace Mann (1), Perrin Woods (1), Snyder Park (0), Warder Park (2), Schaefer (1), Hayward (3), Roosevelt (0), Springfield High (0), Keifer (2), Ridgewood (0), Catholic Central Elementary St. Theresa’s (0), St. Bernard’s (2), Emmanuel Christian (0), Clark Preschool Early Learning Center (3) Christian Edu-Care (3), Springfield-Clark Career Technology Center (1), Springfield Prep (2) Springfield Academy of Excellence (7), and Springfield Christian Schools (4).

I am pleading with someone to help me keep our children safe while they are in school. They are very vulnerable walking to and from school. An outcry to the public could push the sheriff’s department to do something about this. I would appreciate any help you could give the children in my community.

Do kids deserve clean, safe place to learn?

I was sitting here thinking about the recent Northeastern failed levy, and came to the conclusion that we have some pretty smart “no” voters

I am employed by Springfield City Schools, and the thought of getting up in the morning and going to a brand new school just sickens me. In order for me to get into the new building, I have to use my security code. The nerve, a safe school for me and the students. Yes, I can see why “no” voters wanted not to have this feature.

Then I have to go through a large bright hallway to get to my room where (gasp) there is running water and a water fountain. Again, I can certainly see why you didn’t want that for the kids. And the room! I can put all 23 students comfortably in new desks. Now, that’s a crime. Again, way to go, “no” voters. Did I mention the smart boards and Apple computers that we have?

Yes, way to head that off, “no” voters. And the whole learning environment in general, you know, like learning is important, and that all students deserve a safe, clean and technology updated place to learn. Well, that sure is a hideous concept, isn’t it. Thanks, “no” voters, I guess you outsmarted all of us.
