Gun hunting for deer begins Saturday, Nov. 21, with the two-day youth-only hunt statewide.
The youth season is open to anyone 17 years old and younger with a valid Ohio hunting license and a $12 youth-deer permit. They must be accompanied by a non-hunting adult in the field.
Hunters may take one deer of either sex during this season, in accordance with existing bag and deer-zone limits. Plugged shotguns, muzzleloaders, handguns and bows are legal.
Last year, youth hunters killed 9,852 deer during the two-day season. The Division of Wildlife anticipates more than 40,000 young hunters will participate this year.
All other regularly scheduled hunting seasons will continue during the two-day youth season. However, all hunters, including deer-archery hunters, are required to wear hunter orange during this period.
The regular deer-gun season runs Nov. 30-Dec. 6, and the weekend of Dec. 19-20.
Archery kills up
Bow hunters killed 53,959 deer during the first six weeks of the state’s archery season, about 4 percent more than last year’s 51,976.
The statewide deer population was estimated to be 650,000 in early October. Approximately 345,000 bow hunters are expected to participate in the statewide deer-archery season through Feb. 7.
Charges pending
If you think wildlife officers have a glamorous job, consider this: Two wildlife officers were staking out a field in Champaign County on the night of Oct. 30 when a vehicle shined its headlights on their cruiser. Soon after a shot was fired, hitting the cruiser in the windshield.
The officers, who were not hit, turned on their emergency lights and a 4.5-mile chase ensued. Three Champaign County men were taken into custody with help from the Ohio Highway Patrol and Champaign County Sheriff’s deputies.
All three were released the following day. Charges will be filed as soon as the investigation has concluded.
