Wright State names next president

Cheryl Schrader will become the next president of Wright State University, the college announced today.

“I am honored and humbled to become Wright State’s seventh president,” Schrader said.

Schrader, who currently serves as chancellor of the Missouri University of Science and Technology, will start her job at WSU in July. She will become the first woman to serve as Wright State’s leader.

Schrader has served as the chancellor of Missouri S&T since 2012. Missouri S&T, located in Rolla, Missouri, is a college of just under 9,000 students.

Schrader said she will have three goals during her first year: financial stability for the university, administrative transparency and campus conversations.

“Together we will take this university to the next level,” Schrader said after thanking university staff and her family.

Schrader sees Wright State as a college close to entering the national stage, she said during her visit in February. She compared Wright State to Boise State University where she previously served as associate vice president for strategic research initiatives.

“I watched them move on to the national scene and that was a rewarding experience,” Schrader said. “That’s where I feel Wright State is.”

Schrader will become Wright State’s next president as the university tries to realign its budget. The university is expected to announce budget cuts and layoffs sometime in April.

Schrader has said the university needs to diversify its revenue streams and learn from its current budget issues.

“You’ve been jolted into this reality and that may be a good thing because now everyone is focused going forward,” Schrader said in February.
