Urbana woman killed in West Liberty crash

An Urbana woman was killed in a head-on crash in Logan County on Tuesday afternoon, according to troopers from the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Norma Jeannine Thomas-Smith, 81, of Urbana, was headed south on U.S. 68 near milepost 2 in Logan County around 3 p.m., and was pronounced dead at the scene. Melanie J. Manns, 48, of Ada, was headed north on U.S. 68 driving a 2000 Toyota Tacoma.

Thomas-Smith’s 2003 Chevrolet Impala went left of center, striking the Manns’s truck, troopers said. Manns was taken by Careflight to Miami Valley Hospital for what were described as non-life-threatening injuries. Her condition was not available Wednesday afternoon.

According to information from WHIO-TV, a small dog in Mann’s truck was also killed in the crash.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, according to information from the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and the crash is under investigation.

Troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Crash Reconstruction Unit were also assisting with the investigation. The Mac-O-Chee Fire Department also provided assistance at the scene.
