John Boehner to attend Donald Trump inauguration

When President-elect Donald Trump is sworn in on Jan. 20, look for a familiar — and tan — face in the crowd.

A spokesman confirmed last week that former House Speaker John Boehner and his wife will attend Trump’s inauguration in Washington, D.C. later this month. Ohio Gov. John Kasich said Wednesday that he, too, will be in D.C. to watch Trump sworn in.

But while Kasich was an early and persistent critic of Trump, Boehner was a defender. The two have golfed together, and in December, Boehner told Cincinnati’s WCPO that Trump “kind of reminds me of Teddy Roosevelt.”

“You look at what Teddy Roosevelt did, he came in to do big things,” he said. “Donald Trump isn’t there to kind of trim around the edges and occupy the White House.”

Boehner retired from the House last year. The West Chester Republican now serves on the board of the Reynolds American tobacco company.
