Springfield police seek suspect in teen's slaying

Police say a student at Keifer Academy is the suspected shooter who killed Jeff Wellington, a standout high school athlete.

Police announced Monday they are looking for Tyrin Lemond Hawkins, 17, in connection to the investigation of the early Sunday morning fatal shooting outside the Coventry Village Apartments on North Limestone Street.

Grief counselors were on hand at the high school Monday to assist students and staff members in dealing with the loss of their 17-year-old classmate, student and friend.

Springfield Police Chief Stephen Moody said Wellington was trying to resolve a dispute between several people when he was fatally shot.

Wellington was a star running back for the Springfield Wildcats and many expected him to play at the collegiate level.

More details from the investigation were expected to be released in a press conference held Monday afternoon.
