Internationally known AIDS activist Zackie Achmat will be the keynote speaker for Wittenberg University’s 165th Commencement, scheduled for May 15, the university announced today, Feb. 5.
Founder and chairman of the South African AIDS activist group, Treatment Action Campaign, Achmat was named Time Magazine’s Person of the Week in April 2001 for his work to secure treatment for South Africa’s 4.7 million HIV patients.
A Nobel Peace Prize nominee in 2004, Achmat has been the recipient of the inaugural Desmond Tutu Leadership Award, the Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights, and the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights.
