SPRINGFIELD — “Food, Family and Festivals in Chinese Culture” will be the latest event hosted by the Global Education and Peace Network.

The event will feature a presentation by Howard Y. F. Choy, Ph.D., an associate professor of Chinese language and cultural studies at Wittenberg University.

Nancy Flinchbaugh, Fair Housing and Mediation coordinator for Springfield and a member of the Global Education board, said having a program on Chinese culture is important due to China’s status as the most populous nation in the world.

“It’s important for us as Americans to understand what we can about Chinese culture,” Choy said.

Food culture is also a natural curiosity for many people, Flinchbaugh said.

“Food is a common denominator because we all eat,” Flinchbaugh said. “We have a little bit of understanding of Chinese food culture with the restaurants we have, but we don’t have as good an understanding of how food is incorporated into life and rituals.”

Originally from Hong Kong, Choy has studied Chinese culture and literature, including a recent study comparing political jokes in the U.S., China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Choy serves as adviser for the Wittenberg University East Asian Studies Journal and has taught classes on Chinese cinema, culture and literature.

Choy’s presentation will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Room 105 of the Shouvlin Center on Wittenberg’s campus.

The Global Education and Peace Network formed out of study circles following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
