URBANA — Urbana University has added four associate degree programs to its College of Nursing and Allied Health.

Beginning this fall, the university will offer occupational therapy assistant, physical therapy assistant, radiographic imaging technologist and respiratory therapist degrees.

The programs are offered through Urbana’s participation in the Northwest Ohio Allied Health Education Consortium, university spokeswoman Christina Bruun-Horrigan said Friday, Feb. 5.

Students enrolled in any of the programs will complete their general education courses at Urbana. Program courses will be offered via long-distance education through Rhodes State College in Lima.

Students will be required to participate in occasional laboratories in Lima, Bruun-Horrigan said. Required clinical experience will be provided through local health care facilities.

The programs are designed to provide a convenient and cost-effective way to pursue a health-related degree close to home, said Nancy Sweeney, dean of Urbana’s College of Nursing and Allied Health.

“Health care is one of the fastest growing industries in the country,” Sweeney stated in a university release. “We are pleased to be able to offer these associate degree programs — which previously weren’t available in the area — to individuals who are looking for a new career or a career change.”

The program makes the school a one-stop shop for individuals pursuing any level of medical-related education, Horrigan said.

“They can start with their associate, come back and get a bachelor’s and then go on to earn a master’s of science in nursing,” she said.
