SPRINGFIELD — A semi-trailer that caused a fatal crash on Jan. 7 on Interstate 70 was driving too fast for road conditions when it slid across the median and crashed into a shuttle bus, according to a preliminary report by the Springfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
No one has been charged in the accident, but troopers said Zygmunt W. Wieckowski, 54, of Chicago, was driving too fast during a snowstorm when he lost control of the vehicle just south of the Plattsburg Road overpass.
Several motorists who called 911 after the accident also reported that driver was speeding.
The case will now be reviewed by the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office, said Trooper Doug Bitler of the Springfield Post.
The bus, from the Creative Learning Workshop, was carrying adults with developmental disabilities to their residence at Vienna Meadows on East National Road.
Bus driver Tracy L. Williams, 42; Vienna Meadows residents Lonnie E. Acton, 27; Alonzo Ruffin, 36; and Kenny Fry, 61, were killed in the crash.
Six others were injured in the crash.
Bitler said Wieckowski was headed west on I-70 when he lost control of the vehicle in icy road conditions. The semi-trailer slid across a grassy median into the eastbound lane.
He said the semi-trailer clipped the left rear body panel of a 2007 Acura Tl driven by Robin McCann, 44, of Cuyahoga Falls before it crashed head on with the shuttle bus. McCann was not injured in the accident.
