UNION TWP., Champaign County — Officials in Union Twp. reached agreements with several local entities to provide fire service for the township late last week.
Charles Dooley, a Union Twp. trustee, said the township agreed to one-year contracts with four entities to provide emergency medical and fire services to township residents.
In all, he said the township will pay about $72,000 to cover the cost of the services.
The township agreed to:
• An $18,900 contract with the Mechanicsburg Fire Department.
• A $10,500 contract with the Catawba-Pleasant Twp. Fire Department in Clark County.
• A $6,600 contract to use equipment provided by Urbana Twp.
• A $36,096 contract with the Urbana Fire Division for service
Each of the four contracts was an increase from what Union Twp. has paid in the past.
Dooley said the contracts will ensure residents are covered in the case of an emergency. He also said the township will continue to research if other, less-expensive options are available in the future.
Several townships throughout Champaign County have been discussing the possibility of creating new fire districts to determine the best way to provide those services to residents moving forward.
