CLARK COUNTY — Two local charter schools raised their designations on the 2009-10 state report card while another fell two rankings, according to the Ohio Department of Education.

Springfield Preparatory and Fitness Academy and Springfield Academy of Excellence both earned the middle ranking of “Continuous Improvement” on the 2009-10 report card and made gains on the performance index score, a composite of all students’ achievement on all tests across all subjects, according to the ODE.

Life Skills Center-Springfield fell from “Continuous Improvement” to “Academic Emergency,” the lowest possible rating, according to the state. Life Skills targets 16- to 21-year-old students who have not been successful in a traditional educational environment.

Springfield Academy of Excellence, located at 623 S. Center St., also met Adequate Yearly Progress goals, a federal benchmark that measures achievement for subgroups of students by race, disability and economic status.

“We’re just really proud of our students and staff and it feels good, with 86 percent economically disadvantaged, something that people might consider a harder population to teach, that we can still have some good gains,” said Principal Edna Chapman.

Up from “Academic Watch” last year, Springfield Academy of Excellence met one of 10 possible indicators, met AYP goals and has a performance index score of 80.2. The school also exceeded value-added expectations, a standard designed to measure the progress students make during the course of a year.

Springfield Preparatory and Fitness Academy met four of 15 indicators, with a performance index score of 86.5 and exceeded value-added expectations. The school did not meet AYP goals and representatives from the school did not return a call seeking comment.

Life Skills met none of 12 possible indicators with a performance index score of 67.2 and did not meet AYP goals. It did not qualify for the value-added measure, which is only calculated for fourth through eighth grade in math and reading. A representative for Life Skills did not return a call seeking comment.
