SPRINGFIELD — Daniel L. Cupps, 20, who has no permanent address, was arrested Friday, June 26, on charges of failure to comply, felony theft and receiving stolen property after a pursuit in which two police cars were damaged.

Authorities also recovered three stolen vehicles during the incident, which began around 8 a.m.

"All the officers did a good job, especially Officer John Keys," said Springfield Police Division Chief Stephen Moody. "(His) attention to detai was critical in the recovery of these stolen vehicles."

According to a report by the Springfield Police Division, officers were investigating a report of a stolen Honda Civic when they witnessed Cupps headed south on Reaper Avenue in a 1997 Honda Passport that had also been reported stolen.

Police pulled up on both sides of Cupps’ car, as well as behind him, at the intersection of North Belmont Avenue and East Main Street. But when officers tried to pull him over, Cupps’ vehicle took off, striking a police cruiser, reports state.

He continued to travel south on South Belmont Avenue, ignoring police sirens and running several red lights, according to the report.

The right rear tire of Cupps’ vehicle eventually blew out, according to the report. The car struck a police cruiser as Cupps fled on foot.

He was arrested by detectives in the 400 block of Sheridan Avenue, according to the report.

After his arrest, Cupps admitted to stealing a 1998 Honda Civic, reports stated. A third stolen vehicle, a 1999 GMC Denali, was recovered in the 2800 block of Hilltop Avenue.
