Thank a vet: Area events honor those who served

Today, Nov. 11:

Greenon High School will honor Greenon graduates and those currently residing in the school district who are veterans or active duty personnel. 9:30 a.m. at the school, 3950 S. Tecumseh Road, Springfield. (937) 325-7343.

Veterans Park will host a program at 11 a.m. After the program, veterans are invited to a lunch sponsored by the Clark County Veterans Office at the Heritage Center. The lunch will start at 11:30 a.m. A limited number of free tickets for the lunch are still available at the Veterans Office. After the lunch, a patriotic movie will be shown at Elderly United, 101 S. Fountain Ave.

Cedarville University will hold a veterans celebration at 10 a.m. in honor of the sacrifice and dedication of servicemen and women. During the ceremony, Alex Mol, a senior chemistry education major at Cedarville, will share the story of Retired Army Air Corps Lt. Colonel James B. Cheney’s time as a fighter pilot and POW during World War II. Military personnel are encouraged to attend in uniform. Dixon Ministry Center, 251 N. Main St., Cedarville. (937) 766-7610.

American Legion Post 286, 2251 N. Dayton Lakeview Road, New Carlisle, will host an open house from 2 to 8 p.m. Members and nonmembers welcome.

The American Legion Post 125 Bailey-Frey, 927 S. Yellow Springs St., will hold a Veterans Day program at 6 p.m. Veterans and their families are welcome.

The Grand Court Assisted Living Community will host a Veterans Day ceremony at 2 p.m. Commissioner Roger Tackett will give opening remarks, with the American Legion Post 286 doing a 21-gun salute. The Springfield High School ROTC program will retire the flag and present it to the oldest veteran resident.

City offices: Springfield, closed; New Carlisle, closed; Urbana, closed

Museums: Springfield Museum of Art, closed; National Museum of the United States Air Force, open

Libraries: Clark County Public Library and all branches, open; New Carlisle Public Library, open; Urbana/North Lewisburg/St. Paris libraries, closed

Banks: All areas banks are closed except the Fifth Third Bankmart inside Kroger at 965 N. Bechtle Ave. and U.S. Bank inside Meijer at 1500 Hillcrest Ave., which will hold normal business hours from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
