Ashley Vanzant, a junior at Springfield High School, already knew about the infamous Westcott House in her hometown before this summer.

“I knew it was a really nice building,” she said Friday, July 16. “But seeing all the details makes me see it differently.”

Vanzant is one of seven students afforded the opportunity this month to get to know the home more intimately through The Westcott House Foundation’s second annual Design Studio, a summer camp designed to introduce students to concepts of design and technical skills like video editing.

The foundation partnered with the Seattle-based multimedia studio The Now Device to provide instruction on contemporary audio and visual media for the Design Studio. Students shoot video and still photos of the house, edit them into promotional videos and create music to accompany them.

Part of their projects this summer are going to be used during the upcoming Wright Now event featuring musician Griffin House, a Springfield native, and graphic designer Andy Hayes, who is based here.

“We’re going to transform some part of the house and do a project, some kind of installation,” said instructor Scott James, who work with Springfield native Rod Hatfield at The Now Device.

Through the Design Studio, Simon Fisher of Springfield, a sophomore at the Dayton Regional STEM School, discovered a new passion for photography.

“I just haven’t been exposed to it and I hadn’t realized how much I like it,” he said.

The camp is currently winding down its first session but there are still spaces available in a second session July 26 through Aug. 6. Sessions run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and include projects, instruction and field trips. The cost is $100 but scholarships are available.
