SPRINGFIELD — After more than nine years at the helm of the Springfield Metropolitan Housing Authority, Barbara A. Stewart has announced her resignation as executive director of the agency.

Stewart has accepted a position at Urbana University as vice president of administrative services and chief financial officer, according to her resignation letter.

“I am looking forward to returning to an educational organization and I’m happy it is close to home,” Stewart wrote in her resignation letter.

SMHA Board of Commissioners were notified of Stewart’s plans to leave the housing authority July 1 and Clark County commissioners were notified Tuesday afternoon.

Commissioner John Detrick applauded Stewart for her work with SMHA, an agency he said was struggling before her arrival.

“She got it in very good shape,” Detrick said. “There were a lot of challenges and there were some management issues. But she’s worked to improve that and really raise the bar.”

Stewart described her time with SMHA as rewarding.

“I believe we have made significant improvements in respect to Springfield housing issues and programs,” Stewart said in her resignation letter.

Urbana University officials confirmed Stewart’s employment, but Stewart and SMHA commissioners were unavailable for comment Thursday.
