SPRINGFIELD — Area high school students will get to see Mathematics at Play during the January installment of Wittenberg University’s Saturday Science program. The free program will be held from 10 a.m. until noon Jan. 23, at the Barbara Deer Kuss Science Center and will deal with recreational mathematics — mathematics related to puzzles and problems people do for fun, said Associate Professor of Mathematics Bill Higgins.
“Like many people I became interested in puzzles and recreational problems when I was young,” Higgins said, citing Sudoku puzzles and Rubik’s Cube as examples of math-dependent recreations. “I want to give students a feeling for the history and stories behind a variety of puzzles and problems, and give them some insight into the mathematics behind a few.
“And of course, we’ll try our hand at solving some.”
Wittenberg Saturday Science is funded by a grant from Future Jobs.
The public is welcome to attend the lecture portion of the program, however students must register for the hands-on portion.
