NEW CARLISLE — Andrew Wright came to America in 1980, intending to return home to the United Kingdom two years later.

Monday, after more than 30 years of loving the freedoms he discovered here, Wright finalized the process to become an American citizen.

An active school volunteer and married to teacher Debbie Wright, he could think of no better place to become an American citizen than New Carlisle Elementary School.

“The school and the community are a central part of my life and they have been incredibly supportive of my journey,” Wright said, adding that he wanted to be surrounded by those closest to him for his naturalization ceremony.

Wright completed the final steps of citizenship at the school Monday morning, receiving a standing ovation from the students, staff and community members who attended.

Wright first came to this country for two years as a student. After that, he became a permanent resident, receiving what is frequently referred to as a “green card.”

Wright decided to become a citizen after hearing U.S. District Court Judge Walter Rice speak last year about the importance of defending the Constitution, he told the students.

Rice performed his citizenship ceremony at the school Monday at the request of Principal Brian Dixon and Superintendent Jim Gay.

“It’s just a great learning opportunity for (the students) on the importance of being a citizen of America,” said Gay. “These kids know Dr. Wright through the community and volunteering so that also make it special for them.”

Rice, who reviewed the rights and responsibilities as well as the citizenship process with the students, said he occasionally does citizenship ceremonies at schools and believe everyone — kids and adults alike — should see the ceremony for themselves.

“We tend to take for granted what this country offers and I think it’s important that we all see these ceremonies,” he said.
