More snow followed by freezing rain is in store across the Miami Valley Friday night, according to Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist Jamie Simpson. He said light snow is expected to start mid-afternoon, enough to coat the roads for the evening commute. A mix of freezing rain and sleet will move into the area overnight Friday.
"There will be freezing rain across most of the region, but this is not going to be a repeat of the ice storm last year," he said. Last year's storm dumped more than an inch of ice in some areas and brought down power lines causing widespread outages. "This time we are expecting a quarter of an inch or less," Simpson said. "That should keep the weight of the ice low enough that I do not expect branches or power lines to come down."
Darke County is under a Level 1 Snow emergency issued at 1 p.m. Thursday.
Light snow that fell along the Interstate 70 corridor during the evening commute caused numerous traffic problems including minor accidents and slide offs. Numerous crashes on I-75 northbound in the area of the I-70 interchange led to slow moving traffic.
An accident with injuries was also reported earlier on I-70 eastbound near U.S. 40.
In Clark County, an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper was involved in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 40 near Gordon Road. Trooper Grady Coblentz was travelling eastbound at about 5 p.m. enroute to a traffic crash when he was struck by westbound vehicle that slid left of center, skipped off an eastbound Chrysler Sebring and collided with his cruiser. The driver of the Sebring was transported to Springfield Regional Hospital with minor injuries. No one else was injured.
Numerous other weather-related crashes and slide-offs were reported in Clark County, but all were minor.
Simpson said as much as 2 inches fell in a band between I-70 and U.S. 36. On WHIO-TV's Facebook page measurements of 1.5 inches in Piqua, 1 inch in Celina, a quarter inch in Park Layne and more than 2 inches in Sidney and Troy were reported.
South of I-70, road conditions should remain wet but could turn icy through the evening as temperatures drop into the teens, Simpson said.
The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement for expected snow and slick road conditions in Mercer, Auglaize, Darke, Shelby, Logan, Miami, Champaign, and Clark counties.
Earlier today, emergency crews responded to several crashes in Miami and Darke counties as snow fell.
In Miami County, emergency crews responded to several crashes on Interstate 75 between Troy and Piqua, according to dispatchers. None of the crashes resulted in serious injuries, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol dispatchers.
Local law enforcment said traffic moved slowly through the area, and they warned drivers to take their time and to slow down.
Emergency crews also responded to several crashes in Darke County. Two people were taken to area hospitals after a truck went off Ohio 49 between Oakes Road and Meadow Lane, went back across and flipped over around 11:30 a.m. today.
The Darke County Sheriff's Department said preliminary investigation revealed a tan 2002 Chevy Silverado, driven by Bruce E. Miller, 77, of Greenville was northbound Ohio 49 when he lost control of his vehicle on the snow covered roadway. Miller's vehicle traveled across the centerline, off the left side of the roadway and struck a ditch, causing Miller's vehicle to rollover and come to rest in a field.
Miller was transported to Miami Valley Hospital by Greenville Rescue where he is listed in good condition. Miller's wife, Carolyn J. Miller, 76, was transported to Miami Valley Hospital by Arcanum Rescue where she is in the intensive care unit and listed in good condition.
