SPRINGFIELD — Mechanicsburg veterinarian Herbert Topp drove his truck across Mud Run Creek near Catawba on Saturday, March 13, but was unable to pass safely due to high water.

The creek, which was flooded as a result of the heavy rains that hit the area, crosses Runyan Short Road.

Passerby Todd Craig saw Topp’s truck and stopped to help.

“When I pulled up, I saw Doc stuck in his truck and called for help. I got out and called 911,” Craig said.

Rescue crews received the call at 10:21 a.m.

By the time Craig arrived at the scene, he said he could see only about 6 inches of the front end of Topp’s truck above the water.

Topp was stuck in the water for about an hour until rescue crews from Pleasant Twp. Fire and EMS and a farmer with a tractor removed him from his vehicle.

He was transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center High Street Campus. Topp was listed in stable condition.
