SPRINGFIELD — Dorothy Young said it was hard for her when she and her husband closed Stocksdales restaurant in 1994. She said it will be even harder to see the building torn down this month.

Young and her husband, Carl, leased the former restaurant building at 1205 W. North St. to Joe’s U.S. 40 Grill, which shut its doors last year.

“The building has declined to where you really can’t salvage it,” Carl Young said on Monday. “Perhaps something related to the (new Springfield Regional Medical Center) could use the space.”

Young will offer the 40,000-square-foot lot for sale.

Stocksdales had been a Springfield staple for 28 years when the Youngs purchased it in 1979. The couple had just retired from Youngs Jersey Dairy, which they founded and, keeping the Stocksdales name, ran the restaurant as a family restaurant for 15 years.

“We served home-cooked meals; it was very successful,” Dorothy Young said.

They retired for a second time in 1994. The restaurant had several owners after that.

“Unfortunately, the people who bought it didn’t make it work,” Carl Young said.
