Board settles suit with former superintendent

Southeastern Local Schools board members have approved a settlement in a lawsuit brought by former Superintendent John Abdella alleging that the district has not paid him vacation pay he was entitled to when he resigned, Superintendent David Shea confirmed Friday, March 19.

The agreement includes a $17,000 payment from the board to a 403(b) account for Abdella and bars Abdella from suing the district again, according to documents provided by the district.

Abdella originally sought $22,000 in severance pay he said he was owed after serving as superintendent of the district from August 2007 to December 2008.

Street sweeping starts March 29 in Springfield

The 2010 street sweeping program for the city of Springfield will begin on Monday, March 29.

Sweeping will begin in the southwest quadrant of the city and progress counterclockwise by quadrants until the cycle is completed. One complete sweep of all streets will be performed.

More information regarding the street sweeping program can be found on the government access Channel 5.

No parking signs will be posted on alternate sides of the streets prior to sweeping and illegally parked vehicles will be ticketed. Residents are asked to move their cars so sweepers can do a complete job.

Clark-Shawnee superintendent search to begin

SPRINGFIELD TWP. — Clark-Shawnee Local Schools will use the county education services center for its upcoming superintendent search.

The board hopes to hire someone in May to allow time to transition, said retiring Superintendent Debbie Finkes. Finkes’ last day will be June 30, after nine years at the district’s helm.

The search will be limited to Ohio and will cost about $1,000, said Stacia Smith, the Clark County ESC superintendent who will head the search for the district. The ESC will perform duties such as advertising the position and accepting resumes.

The board plans to post the position next week and will accept applications for three weeks after that, said Finkes.

The spring is the peak hiring time for educational leadership as superintendents looking to make a move want to do so when the fiscal and school year starts over.

“As people wind down years, they consider their options for next year,” Smith said.

Traffic signal at North and Plum
to be removed

The traffic signal at the intersection of North and Plum streets began flashing Friday, March 19, for 21 days. At the end of the flashing period the traffic signal will be removed and Plum Street will become a stopped approach at North Street.

This signal is being removed as a result of the traffic study that was completed for the North Street relocation project. Since Plum Street has been relocated to Yellow Springs Street, the traffic signal no longer meets the Ohio Department of Transportation signal requirements.

The following traffic signals also will be removed in 2011 as part of the North Street relocation project: North Street and Wittenberg Avenue, Columbia and Wittenberg avenues, and Columbia Avenue and Plum Street. A new traffic signal will be installed at the four-legged intersection of North Street, Columbia and Lowry avenues.
