Kroger recalls chicken wings for allergen issue

SPRINGFIELD — Several hundred Kroger stores in 20 states, including all the stores in Clark County, have been affected by a product recall.

Pilgrim’s Pride, a supplier for the grocery store chain, announced Wednesday, June 10, the voluntary recall of 608,000 pounds of its Kroger fully cooked Buffalo-style chicken wings.

The issue was not that the chicken was tainted in any way, but that the products’ labeling failed to provide a full list of ingredients, which may include dairy, soy and wheat allergens.

Such ingredients could cause severe life-threatening allergic reactions in individuals that are sensitive to them. The product was pulled from shelves shortly after the supplier notified Kroger of the mislabeling.

Kroger spokeswoman Meghan Glynn said Thursday, June 11, that no illnesses due to the product had been reported, and that the product is again available on Kroger’s shelves with correct labeling.

Glynn said the company’s goal is to reach customers who bought the product before it was recalled. Customers who used a Kroger Plus Card when buying the product will receive a notification on their next receipt.

“We encourage anyone who is concerned about an allergic reaction to contact their physician,” Glynn said. “And of course we’ll also provide a refund.”

Kroger should recall another one of its products. This product, like these chicken wings, fails to provide to full list of ingredients on its label. However, unlike chicken wings (which have not caused a single illness or death), this Kroger product is the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the US. This Kroger product is called tobacco.
