SPRINGFIELD — The last day of work for Job & Family Services of Clark County employees who will be laid off will not be released until officials have spoken with union representatives, JFS Director of Human Resources Kerry Pedraza said Tuesday, Sept. 8.
“Over the next week, we will be meeting with employees and explaining to them the situation,” she said.
JFS administrators announced that 33 employees will be laid off after cuts from the state totaled a $3.15 million-plus deficit per fiscal year.
Pedraza said laid off workers will be able to use outplacement services with the agency’s WorkPlus program.
“We want to provide every opportunity to use the WorkPlus services,” she said.
Clark County commissioners heard the news at Tuesday’s regular meeting.
Commissioner David Hartley summed up the situation in one word: “Sad.”
Commissioner John Detrick emphasized that the budget issues have come from the state level and JFS is “extremely well-run” under county administrators.
“It’s just regrettable that we have to do this, because of the overall state and national picture,” Detrick said.
The economy is still “touch and go,” added Commission President Roger Tackett.
“These state budget cuts have come home in a big way,” he said. “And it’s going to affect a lot of people.”
