SPRINGFIELD — A dog rescued from an icy lake earlier this week is doing well but is not quite ready for adoption.
On Tuesday, March 9, rescue crews from Enon and Springfield Twp. responded to Hosterman Lake at George Rogers Clark Park and saved a 25-pound dog who was found standing on the thin ice.
Two other dogs drowned in the lake, but crews from Springfield were able to save the mutt, which was turned over to the Clark County Humane Society.
James Straley, executive director of the Clark County Humane Society, said the dog had suffered frostbite on its paws.
Because of how he was discovered, volunteers at the Humane Society decided on a fairly appropriate name for the stray dog: “We’ve taken to calling him Iceberg,” Straley said.
Overall, the dog is physically healthy, but he may still have some psychological issues that need to be addressed before he is ready for adoption. On Friday, Straley said Iceberg was quietly sitting in a volunteer’s lap.
“He’s been through an awful lot right now,” Straley said.
There is no time table for when the dog, who is about 5 years old, will be ready for adoption. Straley said the dog is still timid and traumatized.
Iceberg may already have a potential owner lined up.
John Roeder, chief of the Springfield Twp. Fire Department, said Mandy Anderson, a volunteer firefighter who assisted on the rescue, has expressed interest in adopting the dog.
Overall, Roeder said, the rescue effort went well. While his department is well-prepared for swift rescue operations, such as a rescue on Mad River, they rarely face rescues on frozen water.
“It was something we don’t do all the time, that’s for sure,” he said.
