First brick to be laid at new hospital today

SPRINGFIELD — Nine months after the first concrete footer was laid at the new Springfield Regional Medical Center, the entire concrete structure will be complete — one month ahead of schedule.

“A combination of hard work, good weather and working off of the crushed rocks that came out of the basement,” helped Danis Building Co. beat its target date, said project director Kevin O’Brien, About 23,648 cubic yards of concrete have been used to date, he said.

At 1 p.m. today, Nov. 19, Mark Wiener, president and CEO of Community Mercy Health Partners, will lay the first brick to celebrate the start of masonry work, which will begin in December. The brick laying is not open to public.

The interior wall framing, piping, plumbing, electrical conduit and duct work are under way on the garden level and first floor of the hospital, O’Brien said. Boilers have been delivered, and chillers and interior air handlers are expected on site by year’s end.

Local contractor National Stair will install stairways as stair shafts become available, eliminating the need for workers to climb ladders to access upper floors.

More than $600,000 in contracts and material purchases for the acoustical ceiling package were awarded to local contractors, with Robinson Insulation supplying the materials and Vector Interiors performing the installation.

“To date, the project has awarded more than $17.5 million in work to local, minority- and/or women-owned enterprises,” he said.

Beginning Friday and continuing through mid-December, residents will have an opportunity to sign the final beams that will be placed at the top of the building.

At 3 p.m. Friday, a beam will go on display and be available for signing in the cafeteria of the High Street campus of Springfield Regional Medical Center.

A beam will be set up at the Heritage Center during Holiday in the City’s Santa Land beginning Saturday, Nov. 28. The beam also will be available during Santa Land events Dec. 5 and Dec. 12.

Brick laying not open to public

Today’s bricklaying ceremony at the new Springfield Regional Medical Center is not open to the public. The News-Sun, in error, stated the public was invited to the event.

I'm very glad to hear that some local contractors are involved. So often, major projects are undertaken with all of the work being awarded to contractors or suppliers who have no stake in the community. Good for Danis/CMHP!

If you don't like the hospital/medical care in Springfield, you are free to seek it elsewhere.
You should be thankful Clark County is getting a new hospital that's creating jobs, and will serve the public and contribute to our community.

Wow, new hospital, same horrible care. Yippee.... The nursing staff is great, the doctor in this town are idiots and do not care about their patients, just how much money they can line their pockets with.

A new hospital so you want people to think they will get good or better care then they do at the old hospital. I do not think so it will be run like the old one, with no help so you will get the same poor care

Are all new buildings using public funds still required to spend a proportionate amount of money on art for the building? If so, I propose that we buy art from area artists instead of throwing money at a New York artist like we did when Oracle's Vision was purchased.
