SPRINGFIELD — Each year, Holiday in the City warms the hearts of thousands.

Last year, though, it did little to keep everything else from freezing.

The temperature last year reaching a low of 24 degrees.

But if the rain showers can hold off until the last burst of fireworks tonight, Holiday in the City 2011 should be a much more enjoyable experience — at least as far as your extremities are concerned.

Events are set to begin at 2 p.m. at the annual holiday kickoff surrounding City Hall Plaza. Temperatures should be around 61, compared to last year’s Holiday in the City high of 37.

There’s a slight chance of rain showers after 4 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. But they’ll likely hold off until after 11 p.m.

The main event — including the grand illumination, Santa’s arrival and fireworks — is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Tonight’s low will be around 44 degrees.

At this point, though, the fact that we’re still talking about rain and not snow is probably a good thing. On average, the region experiences its first measurable snowfall by Nov. 21.
