SPRINGFIELD — Thousands poured into the Clark County Fairgrounds for The Old Fashioned Country Fireworks display Thursday, July 2, despite the unusually cool temperatures.

Many bundled in blankets or wearing sweatshirts listened to live music and watched a free fireworks display.

“We’ve always done it as a family thing,” Rita Waddle said. “We bring some pizzas and enjoy the show.”

Waddle’s family packed a picnic and cornhole boards.

For those who didn’t provide their own entertainment, this year, eight children’s rides were added, including a carousel and a Ferris wheel.

“I think it makes it more fun for the kids,” Brian Waddle said. He planned on taking his daughter, Sarah, on the carousel.

Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly patrolled the fairgrounds in his novelty custom-made miniature paddy-wagon.

“This is the first year for the carnival rides, and people seem to really enjoy them,” he said.

Around 10,000 people usually go to the fairgrounds for the event, which is organized by the National Trail Parks and Recreation District.

The fireworks show traditionally takes place July 3, but was moved up this year due to a horse show at the fairgrounds during the holiday weekend.
