SPRINGFIELD — Good weather graced the Clark County Fair last week and the crowds responded.
Preliminary reports indicate that paid attendance climbed to more than 94,100 visits, fair spokeswoman Alissa Armstrong said.
That represents about a 2 percent increase from last year, Armstrong said.
“It’s very good news,” she said. “We’re glad. The weather cooperated with us and that certainly had a lot to do with it.”
The uptick also might be attributable to new events, such as the Dock Dogs competitions and demonstrations.
“That brought some people that might not normally come out to the fair,” Armstrong said.
The attendance totals could change, including possibly increase, once all the numbers are finalized.
The livestock sales also did well at the fair this year, which wrapped up on Friday, July 30.
Preliminary reports indicate that the animal auctions brought in about $800,000 in sales. That’s also up slightly from last year, but Armstrong didn’t have a percentage increase available yet.
The fair livestock sale is one of the largest in the state and country, which Armstrong said is a point of pride.
“It’s an outstanding program we have here at the fair,” she said. “Our buyers are out to support the youth and it really shows.”
Overall about 2,000 people participated in the various exhibits, including the livestock, crafts, plants and more.
“We were pleased with the turnout we had,” she said.
Work now shifts to finalizing the sales and restoring the Clark County Fairgrounds to the condition they were in before the fair.
And looking ahead to the 2011 fair.
“As soon as we’re done, we start gearing up for next year,” Armstrong said.
