URBANA – About 90 employees have been on paid furlough since Saturday at International Fiber Corporation, 1228 Muzzy Road.

Kirsten Lenartowich, vice president of human resources for International, said the company is in a labor dispute with the Teamsters Local 957 of Dayton.

She said the company and union have been in contract negotiations for four months.

“They went on paid furlough to get the union to get them together and make a decision on the final offer and have a vote,” she said.

Lenartowich said the workers are receiving their full pay and benefits. She would not comment on the expected duration of the furlough or possibility of it turning into a lockout.

The company produces fiber products which are used in several industries. It operates three shifts and runs 24 hours a day.

She said the current contract expired in February this year. However, she said neither side was able to reach an agreement on a new contract.

Officials from the union could not be reached for comment Tuesday morning.
