Deputies agree to no pay increase next year

SPRINGFIELD — Clark County Sheriff’s deputies recently ratified a new three-year contract that includes no pay increase in 2010 and postponed step increases through 2011.

The contract — between Sheriff’s deputies, Board of Clark County Commissioners, Clark County and Fraternal Order of Police/Ohio Labor Council — was unanimously accepted by commissioners John Detrick, Roger Tackett and David Hartley Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The contract includes 2 percent pay increases for years 2011 and 2012 and states step increases will resume in 2012.

At the start of the contract negotiation process, the Clark County Deputies Association presented the salary plan to the county, offering to make the changes to “support the safety of the county,” said deputy Darrell Jackson.

The contract proposal was created by a team of four deputies elected by union members. “We all looked at the situation and agreed to it. ...The bottom line is you have to look at the overall picture. ...We understand the situation and were trying to reduce (the possibility of) any potential layoffs and keep services at the same levels,” said Jackson, a negotiating team member who has 20 years’ experience.

The accepted offer was the only one made by deputies, whose current contract expires Dec. 31.

The deputies came in knowing the economic situation in the county and offered the contract, Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly said.

Negotiations were fair and reasonable, Jackson said, adding deputies believed the changes were necessary to retain current staffing levels to ensure service levels are not diminished in the county over the next three years.

The county will save money, Kelly said, not only through the pay freezes, but also because there will not be long, drawn-out contract talks that can have a substantial cost.

The contract was approved by about 92 percent of those voting; 51 deputies voted with 47 casting votes in favor of the contract. There are 107 deputies in the bargaining unit.

“We appreciate your sacrifice during these tough times,” Tackett said, of the deputies’ actions.

CCSO along with the Clark County Probation Department is a joke. Where else can a child molester receives favors from the jail because he is friends with Gene Kelly, and where else can a probation drink alcohol on the job and not get into any trouble. ONLY IN CLARK COUNTY!!!!!!!!!

I'll discontinue my ranting after Steve Williams is prosectued for fraud, theft and tax evasion. Fair enough?

This article relates to CCSO. The former chief of South Charleston is a former Gene's Gem. What did they expect down there when they hired one of Gene's Gems anyway? Maybe Roger Roberts can be the new chief of police in S. Charleston?

Actually I am not related to any of them and not associated with the Sheriff's Dept. I hate hearing your negativity on these blogs honestly. There was an article on here about South Charleston and somehow you got rolling about the CCSO. Its people like you will complain and complain then if you need the department you suddenly need them. I'm sure you want them to do thier best job to help you. You can't catch every criminal in the world, but yet you blame the dept.?
