SPRINGFIELD — Monday, Nov. 30, marked the first day of gun season for deer hunting in the state of Ohio.
Ohio Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Communications Specialist Kathy Garza-Behr said about 420,000 hunters will be on the prowl for deer this week.
“It’s a very popular week,” Garza-Behr said. “We’ll have a lot of people out there.”
Garza-Behr estimated the deer population at 650,000.
She estimated between 115,000 to 125,000 deer will be killed during gun week.
Last year, 116,798 deer were killed during gun week.
“That’s what we’re hoping to get,” she said.
“I would expect us to be near that number this season. The weather has been very good.”
Matthew Miller of Buck Creek Carryout, one of three Clark County deer checkpoints, said nearly 40 deer were tagged by 5 p.m. Monday, and expected even more to come as the day progressed.
“We were shooting for about 50 to 75,” Miller said.
Hunters will have another chance to tag a deer later this month with an extra weekend of gun season scheduled Dec. 19-20.
Archery season runs through Feb. 7, while the muzzle loader season will run from Jan. 9-12.
