SPRINGFIELD — A broken water pipe turned the atrium of Commerce Point, 20 S. Limestone St., into a reflecting pool Saturday after gallons of water poured into the building while employees were off for the holidays.

On Monday, baseboards were still off the walls, desks and filing cabinets in the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce were elevated with small blocks and fans were set up every few feet throughout the main floor.

A hot water heating pipe above a conference room was the cause of the flooding which was mostly contained to the Chamber offices, said building co-owner Chris Simonton. Chamber employees were working out of non-affected rooms while offices were drying out.

Damages are still being assessed but they appeared to be cosmetic in nature, Simonton said.

“I don’t think there’s any structural damage,” he said.

Chamber offices will remain open during the drying process, Chamber president Mike McDorman said.

“We just ask that people be mindful of our situation when they come in,” he said.
